## Best time to visit Hokkaido

![Furano-japan](https://jalvacations.com/hubfs/Destinations/Hokkaido/Furano.jpg "Furano-japan")

Japan's northernmost island rewards visitors in every season, from powder snow to blooming lavender fields. Whether you're chasing world-class skiing, wildflowers, or a cool summer escape, Hokkaido delivers a different experience every few months.

- **Spring (Mar–May):**  Cherry blossoms bloom weeks after mainland Japan, with mild temperatures ideal for exploring Sapporo and Hakodate.
- **Summer (Jun–Aug):** Escape the mainland heat as Furano and Biei's lavender fields reach peak bloom and Sapporo hosts its lively Summer Festival.
- **Autumn (Sep–Nov):** Crisp air and vivid fall foliage blanket Daisetsuzan National Park, with fresh seafood and harvest-season produce at their best.
- **Winter (Dec–Feb):** World-renowned powder snow draws skiers and snowboarders to Niseko and Furano, while Sapporo lights up for the Sapporo Snow Festival.

## Getting to Hokkaido and Getting Around

**Flying to Hokkaido**

New Chitose Airport (CTS), Hokkaido’s main air gateway, is about 35–40 minutes from central Sapporo by train. Japan Airlines operates frequent flights from Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) to New Chitose, with a flight time of approximately 90 minutes.

**Getting Around Hokkaido**

Sapporo's compact subway and streetcar network make the city easy to navigate on foot or by rail. For day trips to Otaru or Asahikawa, JR Hokkaido's rail lines connect major cities efficiently. To reach Niseko, Furano, or Biei — or to explore at your own pace — a rental car is recommended, as public transportation outside Sapporo runs less frequently. Roads are well-maintained, but winter driving requires caution and appropriate tires.
